OREF Open Meeting 3rd October 2023 – Archaeology, archives and anemometers on the Hill

At an OREF event held on Tuesday 3rd October, Archaeologist Dan Lee shares the results of the recent Orkney Energy Landscapes project which explored energy sites past and present, from peat cutting to renewable technology. Further research at key sites such as the UK’s first grid-connected wind turbine at Costa Head provides detailed accounts of early construction and testing which can be linked to the surviving structures. More broadly, this work has highlighted the vulnerable nature of the energy sites in the landscape, richness of archive material and untapped energy stories. This has initiated an Energy Heritage Strategy for Orkney, working with industry and community to find priorities in recording energy sites, managing archive material and collecting stories.
